(PLACERVILLE, CA) –

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency, Area Agency on Aging Family Caregiver Support Program (FCSP) is pleased to present a free, four-part educational series on senior caregiving in January 2025. The educational series will provide supportive information for people who currently care for or plan to care for a family member or friend aged 60 and older.

“This valuable series includes in-depth information on what to expect as a caregiver, how to protect family members and caregivers from scammers, understanding the signs of neglect and self-neglect, and the legal rights and responsibilities of a care provider,” said Jordan Brushia, Program Coordinator with the El Dorado County Area Agency on Aging. “Each educational session will be presented by a different subject matter expert from local organizations, including the Alzheimer’s Association, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office, Adult Protective Services, and Senior Legal Services.”

Classes will be held on Wednesdays, January 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Placerville Senior Center, 937 Spring Street, Placerville CA. The series topics are as follows:

January 8: Building Foundations of Caregiving – Participants of this informative session will explore the role of the caregiver and the changes they may experience. They will also learn about the importance of building a support team and managing caregiver stress. Presented by the Alzheimer’s Association of Greater Sacramento.

January 15: Scams and How to Prevent Being Scammed – This interesting and engaging session will focus on how caregivers can protect themselves and family members from scammers and scams, such as check fraud, gift card scams, love and romance scams and others. Presented by the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Unit. Register early for this popular presentation.

January 22: What is a Mandated Reporter: Elder Abuse and Self Neglect – Participants of this important session will learn about elder abuse, including the signs of neglect and self-neglect, and the role of Adult Protective Services (APS). APS receives reports of abuse, neglect, or self-neglect of elderly and dependent adults residing in their own homes. They investigate and evaluate the need for protection and support services and develop case plans for those unable to meet their needs. Presented by EL Dorado County APS.

January 29: Legal Rights and Responsibilities – This informative session will help participates learn their legal rights and responsibilities as a health care and/or financial agent, as well as other duties associated with caring for their loved ones' health and well-being. Discussion regarding Physician's Order for Life-Sustaining Treatment (POLST) will be included. Presented by El Dorado County Area on Aging Senior Legal Services.
