New Disabled Veterans' Exemption Beginning in 2027

Senate Bill 296 (SB 296), signed into law on September 28, 2026, creates a new property tax exemption for qualifying disabled veterans and certain unmarried surviving spouses. The exemption takes effect starting with the January 1, 2027, lien date.
The new exemption may allow a 50% or 100% reduction on the first $1 million of a qualifying property's assessed value, depending on eligibility and income limits. Some property owners may continue to qualify under the existing Disabled Veterans’ Exemption.

No action is required at this time.
Additional details including claim forms and filing instructions will be provided once the California State Board of Equalization issues official guidance. This page will be updated as more information becomes available.
If you currently receive the Disabled Veterans’ Exemption, updated information will be mailed to you at the end of December, outlining any changes and steps you may need to take for the 2027 filing year.
