Serve on the Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Commission

Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention

Mission

The El Dorado County Juvenile Justice Delinquency Prevention Commission (JJDPC) aims to help at-risk youth by supporting programs that prevent delinquency and provides a forum for involved community members to take action.

Overview

Since it began, California’s juvenile justice system has been shaped by active citizen involvement. The California Welfare Institutions Code (WIC) Sections 225-236 outline how county Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Commissions (JJC/DPC) should operate. The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors has approved citizens from the JJC to also serve on the DPC, known as the “JJDPC.”

Juvenile Justice Functions:

  • Access to enter all juvenile institutions in the County.
  • Inspect institutions and jails where minors are held for more than 24 hours.
  • Check group homes in El Dorado County, as well as those outside the county which house El Dorado County minors, for health and safety concerns.
  • Review treatment programs and make recommendations to the Presiding Judge and Chief Probation Officer.
  • Gather information through hearings and the juvenile court’s ability to require testimony and documents.
  • Suggest improvements based on investigations that would benefit those managing juvenile court laws.
  • Report the results of inspections to the Juvenile Court and the California Board of State and Community Corrections (BSCC) every year.

Delinquency Prevention Functions:

  • Participate in activities that are designed to prevent juvenile delinquency.
  • Work together on activities that prevent or reduce juvenile delinquency, including recreational and health programs that impact youth well-being.
  • Coordinate efforts among government and non-government organizations focused on preventing juvenile delinquency.
  • Provide both direct and indirect services to community members and collaborate with other government agencies to achieve these goals.

Interest in serving on the Juvenile Justice Commission

The JJDPC is empowered by the California Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC) sections 225-231 to "inquire into the administration of juvenile court law." The commission adopts a goal-oriented and proactive approach in meeting its responsibilities throughout the year.

A candidate should possess the integrity and motivation to perform the duties in an objective, fair, and honest manner. The candidate must have the time and commitment to fulfill the appointment responsibilities. The Commissioners participate in standing committees and liaison activities. No restrictions based on age, gender, ethnicity, religion, economic status, or race will affect the eligibility of the candidate.

Commissioners must be available to attend JJC meetings, which are held on the 3rd Tuesday of each month between 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Meetings are currently being held at the El Dorado County Probation Department on 3974 Durock Rd Shingle Springs, CA 95682 and via Zoom.
