Georgetown Cemetery Zone of Benefit

Georgetown Pioneer, Renke Annex, and Georgia Slide

The Georgetown Cemetery Zone of Benefit was formed in 1984 for the purposes of creating, operating, and maintaining two public cemeteries, Georgetown Pioneer and Georgia Slide.

The boundaries are the same as the Fire District in Zone #3 of CSA #9. The residents of the zone pay taxes to support these cemeteries. Because there are over 2,000 known burials in the public section alone, there were concerns that the Pioneer cemetery was close to full. The County stopped the sale of plots and honored only previously sold sales receipts and rights to be buried in family plots. Georgia Slide was then established to provide new plots.

In 2002 the Renke Annex to the Pioneer Cemetery on Greenwood Road was added for additional new burial space near the Pioneer Cemetery. The land was donated to the County by the Renke Family.

Georgetown Pioneer Cemetery was established in 1848 by the first miners who came to the region. Georgetown grew overnight into one of the busiest mining regions on the Georgetown Divide. Being central to the outlying regions, Georgetown served as the supply hub for the northeastern Divide.

The two sections on either side of the road as you enter the front gate of the cemetery are the Old Masonic on the left and the IOOF on the right. As you come to the T, the hundreds of burials in front of you are the public section. This section is maintained and operated by the County of El Dorado.
