Agricultural Lodging

El Dorado County Ag Land Sunset.jpg

El Dorado County is beginning to explore whether updates to the Zoning Ordinance could better support and clarify a growing interest in agricultural lodging - a form of visitor experience that allows guests to stay overnight on working farms, ranches, orchards, and vineyards from an agriculture-first perspective.

Under the County's existing Zoning Ordinance, agricultural lodging is considered part of the broader category of agri-tourism. As interest in agri-tourism continues to rise, staff is evaluating whether our current regulations provide the clarity and flexibility needed for property owners to participate while protecting farmland, rural character, and neighboring uses.

The County is also exploring whether the State's low impact camping program (AB 518) would be a good fit for our community. This optional program gives private property owners in applicable zones the opportunity to earn supplemental income by providing temporary camping to visitors.

Open Houses

Join us for one (or more) of four initial open houses to ask questions and share your thoughts! All are welcome to attend any of the open houses; there will be two open houses with a broad focus (Garden Valley & Pollock Pines), and two that are more agriculturally aligned (Somerset & TBD). Your input could help shape how these programs may be offered in our community. Click here(PDF, 4MB) for upcoming open house information.
