The Sheriff's Property Unit receives, processes, stores, and maintains an inventory of items of evidence, found, and safekeeping property. We maintain detailed and accurate records for chain-of-custody of all items through final disposition.

Requesting Information About a Case
Persons requesting information on a case need to have their Sheriff's report number. If you do not have a case number, please contact the Sheriff's Records Unit to obtain one at (530) 621-5703.
Contacting the Property unit
Please call the appropriate number for the location you wish to reach (Placerville or South Lake Tahoe). You will reach a recording. Please leave your name, case number, phone number, date of the incident and the nature of your call. Property staff will research your case and return your call by the following business day.
**Please Note** Property staff is only in South Lake Tahoe's property unit one day a week. Staff will research your case and return your call by the following week.
Services We Provide
All services require an appointment. If you are late for your appointment, you may be requested to make another appointment. Appointments are made from 8:00AM to 3:30PM.

Claiming Property or Evidence
Property can be claimed only when either one of the following is true:
- The District Attorney's Office has cleared the case.
- The Sheriff's Detectives unit has cleared the case.
- Court Ordered release.
Claiming Found or Safekeeping Property
Please contact the property unit if you intend to claim any found or safekeeping property.
Found property is held for 90 days and if unclaimed, can be claimed by the finder.
Property Releases
To pick up your property, contact the Sheriff's Office, property unit at (530) 621-5709 to schedule an appointment. It may take up to two weeks to process your property release request depending on the type of case.
On cases involving firearms, please contact the property unit for information pertaining to their release.
