Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) Permit

There is no minimum amount of time you must live in El Dorado County before applying. However, at the time of application, you must provide valid proof of residency, such as a driver’s license and voter registration showing your current address. PO boxes and mail drop addresses are not accepted. Your driver’s license must be updated through the DMV so the address matches your application.

Yes. Renewal applicants are required to submit the same application. Additional supporting documents may also be requested by your assigned technician.

No. A denial letter from another law enforcement agency is not required.

No. The safety course is not required before your interview. However, before your permit can be issued, you must complete the required training: 16 hours for first-time applicants or 8 hours for renewals. Both new and renewal applicants must also complete a live-fire qualification for every firearm listed on the permit. Refer to the approved vendor list for training providers.

Fingerprinting is scheduled when you submit your CCW application online, along with your interview appointment.

Processing times vary depending on several factors. Delays are often caused by incomplete applications, missing documentation, or slow fingerprint processing through the DOJ.

You may include up to five firearms on your CCW permit.

Yes. Every firearm listed on your permit must be registered to you through the California Department of Justice.

It is recommended that you start the renewal process at least three months before your current permit expires.

Any extra training is optional. The only mandatory training is the state-required CCW safety course.

No. Do not submit another Live Scan unless instructed by a CCW investigator. If you complete an additional Live Scan without authorization, you will be responsible for any extra DOJ fees before your permit can be issued.

Modifications include adding or removing firearms, updating your address, or changing your legal name. If adding a firearm, list all firearms you want included on your permit, including previously approved ones, and provide a qualification sheet for the new firearm. Address changes require updated proof of residency. Name changes require legal documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order.

There is no limit to the number of modifications you may request.

You must notify the CCW Unit in writing within 10 days of relocating, whether you move within or outside the county. Your permit remains valid for 90 days from the date you move, after which it must be returned to the CCW Unit.

No. CCW permits issued by other agencies do not transfer to El Dorado County. You must apply as a new applicant and complete all initial requirements, including the 16-hour training course through an approved El Dorado County provider.
